Always press “Next” to return to the app’s home screen. If the “Next” button is grayed out, then you must first select another button on the screen.  Then click “Next.” Closing the app before you return to the app’s home screen can cause a loss of your data.

On the app’s home screen, click “My Quit Journey Progress” and then click “What’s my quit date?”  There it will ask you if you want to change your quit date.

Closing the app means that it’s no longer running in the background. To close an app, you swipe up until the app moves completely off the screen.  Leaving the app means that you leave the app open and it stays running in the background, but you return to the phone’s home screen or another app that is open. To leave the app, you swipe up partially. It’s preferable to leave the app running in the background if you can. Before you close or leave the app, ALWAYS return to the app’s home screen first.

If you don’t return to the app’s home screen, you may lose data that the app is collecting. For example, if you are completing a morning or evening assessment and don’t return to the home screen afterwards, the assessment will “time out” and close before saving your responses. If that happens you won’t get credit for completing the assessment. Returning to the app’s home screen always makes sure the app data are saved. Also, if the app isn’t on the home screen when you are notified for an assessment, this can cause the morning or evening assessment to not load correctly.

Every morning and evening you should receive a notification banner that says “Time for an Assessment.” If you click on the banner, it should take you to the assessment. At this time, you cannot go directly to the app to complete the assessment, you must click the notification banner. Note: if you’ve been using the treatment app when you receive a notification banner, the assessment may not load correctly. The treatment app must have been left on the app’s home screen when you click on the notification banner.  If you click on the notification banner when the treatment app’s home screen was not showing then there are two ways to solve the problem.  You can either put the treatment app back on the home screen and then wait for the next notification banner and click on it.  Alternatively, you can go to the “Makeup Assessment” button on the treatment app’s home screen and choose either the “Morning Assessment” or “Evening Assessment” button. If you choose this second option, then you can ignore the other notification banners you get that morning or evening.

You can always make up a missed assessment if you do so on the same morning or evening it was scheduled.  Press the “Makeup Assessment”button on the home screen. Morning assessments can only be made up in the AM on the same day. Evening assessments and breathalyzer tests can only be made up between 5 PM and 11:59 PM on the same day.

On the home screen, press the “My Quit Journey Progress” button and then press the “My breathalyzer test progress” button. This tells you how many breathalyzer tests you have completed, not how many you have passed.

Breathalyzer tests should be completed every evening between Visit 1 and Visit 2. You will be prompted to complete it at the end of the evening assessment. Breathalyzer tests must be completed using the separate iCOquit app and the iCOquit device. The results are then entered into the treatment app. For instructions on how to conduct the test, you can press the “Instructions (App/Study)” button on the home screen and then press the “Breathalyzer Instructions” button.  If you miss an evening breathalyzer test and need to make it up, you can make it up the same evening by pressing the “Makeup Assessment” button on the home screen and then pressing the “Breathalyzer Assessment Only” button.

You should complete a breathalyzer test every evening between Visit 1 and Visit 2. If you miss a breathalyzer test and need to make it up, you can make it up the same evening by pressing the “Makeup Assessment” button on the home screen and then pressing the “Breathalyzer Assessment Only” button.  Breathalyzer tests must be completed using the iCOquit app and the iCOquit device. Please contact staff using the “Call Staff” button. They must make the changes for you. Users cannot make this change.  Even after staff make the change, it can take several days for the change to take effect.

On the treatment app home screen, click “My Quit Journey Progress” and then click “What’s my quit date?”  There it will show you your current quit date and ask you if you want to change it.

On the home screen, click “My Quit Journey Progress” and then click “What’s my quit date?”  There it will ask you if you want to change your quit date.

Before your quit date, we recommend watching the 28 daily treatment videos. These prepare you for your quit journey. You should also be completing morning and evening assessments, as well as evening breathalyzer tests to assess your level of smoking.

On your quit date, you should start using NRT (as directed) and stop smoking cigarettes. You will continue to complete morning and evening assessments, as well as the evening breathalyzer tests, until you attend your second in-person visit. Your goal is to stop smoking and stay smoke-free. However, if you have a slip, don’t worry. Set another quit date and try again. We hope that you are able to stay smoke-free for the 4-weeks before your second visit. However, even if you aren’t able to stay smoke-free, we want you to attend visit 2.

This treatment has two parts. First, there are 28 daily treatment videos designed to help prepare you for your quit date. These videos cover topics like: building the motivation to quit, the effects of smoking on your health, how to deal with cravings and withdrawal, building your quit plan, using nicotine replacement therapy, managing stress, and addressing unhelpful thoughts and feelings. Second, you have been provided 8 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy to help you deal with the physiological withdrawal symptoms that result from quitting. In addition to these two parts, the app has other helpful resources to help you successfully quit. There’s the “Distract Me!” button that can help you wait out a craving. The “Grounding and Breathing” button provides you guidance on managing stress. The “Cultural Connectedness” button provides information about connecting with Native American culture which can help build resilience to stress.

There are 28 treatment videos that are designed to be watched daily for 28 days. At the end of the 28 days, you should set your quit date and start using nicotine replacement therapy to help manage physiological withdrawal. You have 8 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy.

Treatment videos are delivered to you at the end of every morning or evening assessment. If that’s not a convenient time, then you can always click the “Treatment Videos” button on the home screen, which will take you to the full list of videos to watch. You can always keep track of which videos you’ve watched by clicking on the “My Quit Journey Progress” button on the home screen and then clicking on the “My treatment video progress” button.

After you finish watching a video, make sure to press “Next” and then answer the question about whether the video was helpful. After you answer the question, press “Next” two more times to get back to the home screen.  If you fail to go back to the home screen after you watch a video, you may not get credit for watching the video. You’ll know you got credit for watching the video if you click on the “My Quit Journey Progress” button on the home screen and then clicking on the “My Treatment Video Progress” button. There you can see which videos you have completed.

To get the $40 for completing the treatment, you must watch all 28 treatment videos. We recommend watching them every day, in order, as they are assigned to you, but you can watch them at any time, in any order, by clicking on the “Treatment Videos” button on the home screen. Make sure to always return to the home screen by pressing “Next” to get credit for watching the video.

To see which videos you’ve watched, click on the “My Quit Journey Progress” button on the home screen and then click on the “My Treatment Video Progress” button. There you can see the full list of videos. Those you have watched will have a “1” next to it. If you haven’t watched it, there will be a “0” next to it.

You can always rewatch a video by clicking the “Treatment Videos” button on the home screen, which will take you to the full list of videos to watch.

On the home screen, you can click on the “Treatment Videos” button which will take you to the full list of videos to watch. If you don’t know which video you should have watched, you can click the “My Quit Journey Progress” button on the home screen and then clicking on the “Where am I in my journey” button. It will tell you which day you are on and which videos you should have watched.

You should start using nicotine replacement therapy on your quit day and keep using it until you feel comfortable stopping. If you have questions about NRT, you can always click on the “Instructions (App/Study)” button on the home screen and then click “NRT Instructions.”

For patches, you’ll use the 21mg patches each day for 4 weeks, then you will transition to 14mg patches each day for 2 weeks, and then finally you will use the 7mg patches each day for 2 weeks. Apply a new patch every 24 hours to clean, dry, hair-free skin on the upper body (upper chest, upper arm, shoulder, back, inner arm). Rotate where you place the patch (do not apply a new patch to the same site for at least one week). Do Not Smoke while using the patch.  For gum, do not eat or drink 15 minutes before or while using nicotine gum. Chew the gum slowly. Park the partially chewed gum between your cheek and gum when you start to experience a peppery/tingling sensation. Resume chewing when the tingle fades. Repeat the chew/park steps, parking in different areas of the mouth, until most of the nicotine is gone. You’ll know when the nicotine is gone because the tingling doesn’t return, which is usually around 30 minutes after using the gum. It is not recommended that you smoke while using the gum.  You can always find this information in the app by clicking on “App Instructions”, then “NRT Instructions.”

  • Nicotine replacement therapy does not have the same health dangers as commercial tobacco, but there is still a possibility of side effects. You may experience nausea, upset stomach, headache, dizziness, or a racing heart. Side effects specifically associated with the patches are skin irritation or sleep problems. To avoid skin irritation, rotate sites. If you experience difficulty sleeping, you may take the patch off before going to bed. Discontinue use of the patch and consult a physician if side effects persist.
  • Nicotine gum is a medicine and must be chewed in a certain way for it to work. If you chew too fast or do not chew correctly, you may get hiccups, heartburn, or other stomach problems. Other side effects may include throat irritation or mouth sores. To reduce the chance of side effects follow these instructions closely. If symptoms persist, discontinue use of the gum and consult a physician.

If you slip, that’s ok. Quitting smoking is hard. In case of a slip, forgive yourself and try again. Don’t get discouraged. Admit that you had a slip, but don’t treat it as a failure. Try to identify what triggered you to smoke and prepare a better plan to deal with the problem next time. Use positive self-talk and make sure you use the nicotine patches and gum to reduce your cravings.  We have scheduled a buffer period after the 28-day treatment period to account for the possibility of slips. That way if you slip, you still have time to adjust your quit methods and remain smoke-free for 28-days prior to Visit 2. If you do slip, make sure you update your quit date in the treatment app. To change your quit date, click on “My Quit Journey Progress” and then click “What’s my quit date?” There you will be able to change your quit date.

Click on “My Quit Journey Progress” and then click “Where am I in my journey?”  You can also see what day it is by clicking on “My treatment video progress” or “My daily assessment progress.”

Click on “My Quit Journey Progress” and then click “Chart my smoke-free streak.” However, breathalyzer test results must be verified by study staff to receive payment for being smoke-free for 28 days.

There are lots of things you can do!  Nicotine replacement therapy (patches and gum) are used to manage the physiological effects of nicotine withdraw that create cravings/urges. Also, since cravings generally only last a few minutes, we have added the “Distract Me!” button so that you can distract yourself with a short video or a web-based video game.  If you distract yourself for 10-15 mins, you can typically make it past cravings/urges. And finally, you can use grounding and breathing techniques to help you manage the stress caused by cravings/urges. You can click the “Grounding & Breathing” button to access short videos that guide you through these techniques.

Cultural connectedness refers to the degree of integration or relationship an individual has with their cultural heritage, identity, or community. It involves feeling a sense of belonging and identification with cultural practices, traditions, beliefs, values, and norms. Building cultural connectedness can provide a sense of rootedness, purpose, and community, while contributing to the preservation and diversity of global cultural heritage. Although cultural connectedness is not formally a part of the treatment, we know from research that connecting with Native culture can build resilience to stress and therefore may help you quit smoking.

On the app’s home screen, click on “Instructions (App/Study)” and then click on “Study Instruction.”  Additionally, you can go to the study’s webpage at:  https://tulsaplan.org/oksnap-4

The minimum length of the study is 56 days and the maximum length of the study is 84 days. This study involves two in-person lab visits that last approximately 5 hours each. After the first lab visit, you will be asked to complete a 28-day smoking cessation treatment using a smartphone app. After the 28-day treatment, you will try to remain smoke-free for 28 days before the second lab visit. If you are able to maintain 28 smoke-free days and then attend your second lab visit immediately after, then you will be in the study for 56 days. However, we have also provided a 28-day buffer period after the 28-days of treatment in case you experience slips. So if you need the full 28-day buffer and attend your second lab visit after that, then you will be in the study for 84 days.

  • If you complete all aspects of this study, the total payment is $520.
  • For each in-person visit you complete, you will receive $100 and a $25 gas card. If you end a visit early, you will be compensated with $10 for every hour completed during the visit.
  • If you complete morning assessments, evening assessments, and breathalyzer tests for at least 5 days per week, you will receive $10 per week. (Note: all three must be completed each day to get credit for that day)
  • If you complete both lab visits, the daily assessments, and the daily breathalyzer tests you will also receive a $50 bonus.
  • If you watch all 28 treatment videos, you will receive $40. Or you will receive $10 per week for each week that you watch all 7 videos for that week.
  • You will also receive $100 if you remain smoke-free for the 28 days prior to Visit 2. You must remain smoke-free for the full 28 days to receive this payment.
  • This information can be found in the treatment app by clicking on the “Instructions (App/Study)” button and then on the “Study Instructions” button.
