Special Thank You To Our Research Participants

The research team of the Psychophysiology Laboratory for Affective Neuroscience (PLAN) would like to extend their appreciation to the hundreds of women and men who have participated in research at PLAN. Without their selfless contributions, it would be impossible for us to further the science of pain and emotion.

Oklahoma Study of Native American Pain Risk iv (OKSNAP-iv)

This study aims to understand whether quitting smoking can reduce the risk of chronic pain in Native American adults, who experience higher rates of both chronic pain and non-ceremonial tobacco use compared to other groups.

Participants will complete two 5-hour lab visits—one before and one after a 4-week at-home smoking cessation program—along with daily smartphone diaries and carbon monoxide (CO) breath tests between visits. During the first visit, researchers will confirm eligibility, collect physical measurements and a small finger-prick blood sample, administer questionnaires, and assess responses to different pain stimuli while monitoring the body’s reactions. Participants will then receive instructions for a 4-week online treatment and 8 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy, and the second visit will repeat testing and include a short interview about their experience.

Eligible participants must identify as Native American, American Indian, or Indigenous, be a daily moderate smoker, and own a smartphone with a data plan.

Check out the OKSNAP-IV page for more information and to contact the laboratory.

The PLAN Lab is current recruiting healthy, pain-free Native Americans for a 5-year, 2.75 million dollar NIH study on the impact of sociocultural stressors and resilience on chronic pain risk in Native Americans. Interested applicants should visit our OKSNAP-III page for more information and to contact the laboratory.

The PLAN Lab is conducting a study approved by the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, and Indian Health Service – Oklahoma City Area Office IRBs intended to explore chronic pain in Native American individuals. The goal of this study is to gain information about the current needs of, and resources available to, Native Americans who experience chronic pain.

This study involves filling out several different questionnaires. Participants can choose to do this online through our survey platform Qualtrics or through a mail-in packet. In exchange for filling out these questionnaires, you will receive a gift card worth $25.
